Judith S. Ziss

Ms. Ziss, who joined Cooke Clancy & Gruenthal LLP in 2008, devotes her practice to litigation at the trial and appellate levels with an emphasis on written advocacy.  Previously, she practiced for over twenty years with Willcox, Pirozzolo & McCarthy, a small Boston firm that handled complex cases.  Ms. Ziss has special expertise in insurance coverage litigation, including environmental and other claims spanning multiple policy periods, as well as intellectual property law, antitrust law, and procedural matters.  She also is experienced in such diverse areas as administrative law, contracts and commercial litigation, intentional torts, such as fraud, and landlord-tenant law. 

 A cum laude graduate of the Columbia Law School, Ms. Ziss was an Editor of the Columbia Journal of Law and Social Problems and joined the Justice Department upon her graduation through the Attorney General’s Program for Honors Law Graduates.  While serving in the Civil Division’s Appellate Section, she briefed and argued cases in most of the federal courts of appeals.  After moving to the Antitrust Division’s New York Field Office, she headed or participated in merger investigations or litigation involving felt, frankfurters, film exhibition, and financial services and was co-lead attorney in the indictment of three New York high-fashion retailers for price-fixing. 

 

Ms. Ziss is a member of the bars of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey; three federal district courts; and eight federal courts of appeals.  She has taught legal research and writing to foreign lawyers in Boston University’s LL.M. in American Law Program.   She earned her undergraduate degree magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
